Hourly and As-Directed Chauffeur Service in Markham
Point-to-point works when you know where you are going and when. As-directed is for the other kind of day, and in a town laid out like Markham that is most of the interesting ones.
There are two ways to buy chauffeured transport and the difference is not cosmetic. Point-to-point is a defined trip: this address to that address, quoted as one number. As-directed is a block of time: the car and the chauffeur are yours from a start time, and you say where it goes as the day develops.
Most people default to point-to-point because it is easier to picture. In Markham, a surprising share of them should have booked the other thing.
When as-directed is the right call
- Three or more stops. Once a day has three destinations, booking three separate trips means three dispatches, three arrival windows and three opportunities for the schedule to slip. One car that stays with you removes all of it.
- The schedule will move. Meetings run long. A 2pm becomes 2:40. On a point-to-point booking that is a problem to be solved. On an as-directed booking it is just Tuesday.
- You are carrying things. Sample cases, documents, presentation equipment, luggage between a hotel and an evening flight. They stay in the car rather than being moved in and out four times.
- Parking is the real enemy. Commerce Valley Drive at 10am, Markham Centre during an event, anywhere downtown at any hour. A held car does not park; it repositions and comes back.
- Nobody should be driving later. Client dinners, hospitality, a long evening on Main Street Unionville. This is the most honest reason people book a car and it does not need dressing up.
- The day has an aircraft at each end. Land at 10am, work, fly at 6pm. The car covers the whole thing as one arrangement.
How it actually works
You book a start time, a starting point and an estimated block of hours. There is a minimum, which is standard across this market and exists because a chauffeur and a vehicle committed to your afternoon cannot be sold to anybody else. Time is normally counted from the agreed start until the chauffeur is released.
Inside the block, you direct it. Add a stop. Skip one. Wait twenty minutes while a meeting overruns. Send the car to collect somebody else from a Markham office and bring them to you. None of that needs renegotiating, which is the entire point.
If the day runs past the booked block, it can usually be extended, and that is an honest usually rather than a guaranteed yes. There are three cars. If one of them has a 7pm airport collection already booked, it has a 7pm airport collection. You will be told where the hard edge is at the start rather than at 6:45pm.
The Markham day this was built for
A visiting director lands at Pearson at 9:30am. The car meets the flight, runs the 407 east, and the first meeting is at a Commerce Valley Drive office in Thornhill at 11. Lunch on Highway 7. Two o'clock on Allstate Parkway, which is twenty minutes away at that hour and would be eight at six in the morning. A four o'clock in Richmond Hill off Highway 7 and Bayview. Then the difficult part — down the 404 and the DVP to a downtown office for a 6pm, which is exactly the wrong direction at exactly the wrong hour, and then back out to Pearson for a 9:20pm departure.
That day has six positions and a guaranteed schedule change somewhere in the middle. Sold as six trips it is a logistical exercise for whoever booked it. Sold as one held car it is a phone call.
Other things people hold a car for
Property and site days. Four or five addresses across Markham, Richmond Hill and Stouffville in an afternoon, often on rural roads north of Bloomington where mapping is optimistic. Common for developers, agents and anyone touring sites.
Medical and hospital days. An appointment at Markham Stouffville Hospital in Cornell or Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, where the finishing time genuinely cannot be predicted and sitting in a waiting room watching the clock is the worst part of the day. The car waits.
Family occasions with several legs. A celebration dinner, a theatre evening at the Flato Markham Theatre, a family event with older relatives who should be dropped at the door rather than walked from a parking structure.
Shopping and errand days. Unglamorous and entirely legitimate. Several stops, bags accumulating in the car, nobody circling a lot at Markville on a December Saturday.
Days out of the region. Niagara, Collingwood, Prince Edward County, a cottage run north on the 404 and Highway 48. These are long as-directed blocks and they need booking well ahead, because a car committed to a full day out of the corridor is a car unavailable for everything else.
What makes a held day run well
The difference between a good as-directed booking and an awkward one is almost entirely information handed over at the start.
- A rough shape, even a provisional one. Four addresses and approximate times is enough to plan a day, and it is far more useful than being told nothing because the schedule is not final. Plans change; absorbing that is what the booking is for.
- Who is riding and who is directing. Frequently different people. The chauffeur needs to know whose instruction carries when the passenger says one thing and the itinerary says another.
- Building entrances, not just addresses. On Commerce Valley Drive, in Markham Centre and across most of the Highway 7 office cluster, the lobby door and the vehicle door are on different sides of the building. Thirty seconds of this at booking removes ten minutes on the day.
- The hard edges. If there is a flight at the end, or a reservation that cannot move, say so at the start. Everything else flexes around a fixed point once the fixed point is known.
- Whether anything stays in the car. Luggage, sample cases, coats. It changes where the car can wait and whether it can be left at all.
What comes back is a plan with the awkward parts already flagged: the midday Highway 7 crossing that takes three times as long as the map suggests, the 6pm downtown meeting that means going south on the DVP at the worst hour of the day, the gap in the middle that is long enough to be worth releasing the car for. Better to argue about that on the Monday than discover it on the Thursday.
What it is not
It is not a taxi on retainer and it is not a car you hail. Everything here is arranged in advance. It is not a stretch, a party bus or a group vehicle: four to five passengers with luggage in an Audi Q7 or Q9 is the honest capacity, and a party of eight is two cars booked early or it is somebody else's job.
And it is not always the cheaper option. If your day is two fixed legs with a long gap between them, two point-to-point trips will cost less than holding a car for eight hours. That gets said on the phone, because selling somebody eight hours they did not need is a good way to never hear from them again.

Yes, and it is normal across this market — a car and a chauffeur committed to your afternoon cannot be sold to anyone else. Can I extend the booking on the day?
Usually, and honestly not always. With three cars, an extension depends entirely on what is already booked after you. The useful habit is to ask at the start of the day rather than at the end, because that is when something can be moved. You will be told at booking if there is a hard finish time on that car.
Does the chauffeur wait with the car between stops?
The car stays available to you for the whole block. Where it physically waits depends on where you are — some Markham office campuses have visitor parking a chauffeur can sit in, while Commerce Valley Drive at midday or anywhere downtown usually means repositioning nearby and returning when you call. Either way it is a few minutes, not a new booking.
